By storing your baby’s newborn stem cells with CELVI, you will have the opportunity to register the cord blood with the Sunflower Fund donor registry, at no extra cost.  Should it be identified as a potential match for a patient, you will be contacted to decide if you want to donate the stem cells or not.  You have absolutely no obligation to donate the stem cells if you don’t want to.   If you decide to donate all or a portion thereof, you will be reimbursed accordingly in line with the costs you incurred for banking the cord blood stem cells.

Our story started 23 years ago when our founder’s nine-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. In a world of tests, doctors and desperation, she needed a miracle cure to stay alive. The only potential cure was a matched sibling donor stem cell transplant. But she had no siblings.

Out of desperation, her mother was tested and found to be a 100% tissue match – a one in a million miracle! The stem cell transplant saved the little girl’s life and her mother’s life was changed to one with a new purpose: to give back to this community in any way she possibly could.

After a journey of two decades gaining experience and meeting people with a shared vision, CELVI was born. Our team’s mission is to provide options of lifesaving treatments, made possible with newborn cord blood and tissue stem cells.

Gizelle’s Story

Gizelle was diagnosed with a bone marrow failure condition in March 1995. She was only 9 years old. Her blood cell counts were extremely low, and she was immediately started on medication to try and keep her red blood cells at normal levels. With very low levels of white blood cells and platelets, her chances of developing severe infections or excessive bleeding were very high. She had to stop all sport activities and was home-bound for most of the time. The only curative treatment for this condition was a bone marrow transplant, now known as a stem cell transplant.

The Parent’s Guide to Cord Blood started out as a website in 1998. It was a public service project in memory of Shai, the daughter of the founder Dr. Frances Verter. In 2006 a Board of Directors was recruited, and the Parent’s Guide to Cord Blood incorporated as a non-profit foundation in 2007.

The treating doctor will determine the use of cord blood for treatment, depending on many factors, including the patient’s medical condition, the quality of the cord blood sample, if the patient’s own cord blood can be used or an adequately matched donor’s cord blood.The use of cord blood has been established in stem cell transplantation and has been used to treat more than 80 diseases. The use of cord blood in regenerative medicine is still being researched and there is no guarantee that treatments being studied in the laboratory, clinical trials, or other experimental treatments will be available in the future.The use of cord tissue stem cells is still in early research stages, and there is no guarantee that treatments using cord tissue stem cells will be available in the future. Cord tissue stem cells are found in the cord tissue which is stored whole. Additional processing will be required to isolate the stem cells from the tissue for use. CELVI (Pty) Ltd outsources all cord blood and tissue processing and storage activities to Next Biosciences in Midrand, South Africa, a licensed and AABB accredited facility.
